Dennis “Greg” Powless, full blooded Oneida, was a three time Golden Gloves Wisconsin Champion. He began his quest to be a champion boxer in his teens as he trained by running down the reservation roads to get in shape and to overcome his childhood asthma. Powless ran through all four seasons, many times through sub-zero temperatures or the sweltering hot humid summer days, to get his lean body in shape.
Powless began boxing in 1967 when he was 15 years old. He won his Golden Gloves division three times and also went to the US Golden Gloves competition in Las Vegas and Fort Worth. A few years later he won the Wisconsin Northeast Tough Man Competition and went on to the same title in Columbus Ohio.
In the late 60’s and 70’s the Oneida Reservation had very little equipment or space for training and usually ended up in the basement of an old tribal building. Growing up in a rural community before gaming, there were no recreational facilities or training centers. Powless worked out in garages and basements and in the summer he had the entire reservation at his disposal.
Powless is retired following a lengthy career in law enforcement with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department and as Chief of the Oneida Police Department.
Powless has been married to his childhood sweetheart, Nancy for more than 54 years. They have two sons and one daughter and nine grandchildren. He continues to keep in shape by working out regularly. He cuts wood, clears the land and maintains the landscape around his 150 year old homestead fondly called the Powless Compound. He enjoys watching his grandkids sporting events. His eldest grandson is following his footsteps as a champion Golden Gloves Boxer. Besides his family time, his retirement is spent golfing and watching the Green Bay Packers.
